Time to Shine: Breaking the Barriers of Exclusion for Those With Special Needs

People with special needs often find themselves on the sidelines of situations, limited by the lack of support structures available for them to engage or participate fully. In this episode, we spoke with Dr. Brandon Briery from Children’s Association for Maximum Potential (CAMP) about their ethos to break the barriers of exclusion; providing the support and encouragement for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities to actualize their dreams.

Focusing On Opportunities Rather Than Limitations, Whilst Providing the Support That Is Needed

It’s all in the name: CAMP gives people the chance to experience things they are not usually able to do – allowing parents and care-givers a break, whilst reassured that their children are being cared for and assisted in reaching their full potential. They provide a variety of year-round programs which cater to the diverse needs of their campers; offering everything from arts and crafts, to canoeing, archery and horseback riding. Brandon explains how they listen to the wants and desires of each camper, focusing on adapting activities to enable inclusion, and fostering a safe and supportive environment through a 1:1 ratio of camper:counsellor care.

“So we have campers who use ventilators to breathe, who get to go in the pool, get to go down the slip and slide, because we have respiratory therapists, physicians, nurses and camp counsellors who are right there supporting them – making it safe, making it possible.”

As Brandon explains, the atmosphere within CAMP is always focused on the individual. Encouraging each person to make their own decisions, try new things, overcome fears, and crucially – not be scared to fail and try again. With all the appropriate support structures around them, campers are able to build their self-confidence, tenacity, and independence.

CAMP is always looking for new volunteer counsellors, willing to dedicate themselves to a fulfilling position and gain essential skills for their future.
