Heath's Story

          For Heather Contreras, a former counselor, CAMP was her happy place. Heather saw firsthand how campers came together in a safe environment and participated in activities they may not be able to enjoy outside of CAMP. Now as a parent, Heather wanted to share these same joys and experiences with her son Heath.

          Heath’s CAMP journey began at a Family Weekend Retreat, where parents interested in CAMP programs are given an opportunity to experience CAMP together as a family. As the weekend unfolded, Heather observed Heath's growing confidence and interactions with others, setting the stage for their summer adventure. Heather admits that when she brought Heath to summer CAMP, she was apprehensive about leaving him in the care of others for the first time. To her surprise and relief, Heath courageously immersed himself in the CAMP experience, engaging in many activities like canoeing and arts and crafts.

          Before attending CAMP, Heath rarely spoke or made eye contact with others. He did not feel comfortable interacting with other kids and would rely on Heather to communicate on his behalf. However, Heath’s experiences at CAMP sparked a remarkable transformation. Heather witnessed Heath tie his shoes and interact with the counselors and other campers. Heath’s social skills improved so much that he surpassed his speech goals, and no longer needed speech therapy.

          Heath’s story is just one of thousands of campers who find belonging and empowerment at CAMP.
