Karen's Story
by Chris Smith
Karen has been part of the CAMP community as a camper parent and board member for over 20 years. Her journey with CAMP began with apprehension as she dropped off her daughter, Shelby, for the first time. However, CAMP quickly relieved Karen of those fears. The experience was so profound that when she returned to pick Shelby up, she was not ready to leave, already embracing her newfound independence.
For Karen and her family, CAMP has been a lifeline, giving them the rare respite they need and allowing Shelby to explore her capabilities in a safe and nurturing environment. Karen’s hopes are simple – that CAMP continues to grow, reaching more families and creating lasting impacts. She knows that this is only possible because of the dedicated volunteers and staff who come together to support CAMP’s mission to strengthen and inspire individuals with disabilities – and those who care for them – through Recreation, Respite, and Education.
